9ct Carat Gold Large Agate & Enamel Victorian Mourning Brooch Inscribed 1860. Amazing, large agate and enamel, fine gold, unique inscribed Victoran mourning brooch. Very large mid Victorian brooch. Large agate oval cabouchon (3 x 2cm) bezel set and surrounded by black enamel with a crimped scrolled edging. Overall size of brooch; 4.5cm wide x 4cm high. The back has an oval glass covered compartment, which at some point would have possibly contained hair or a photograph. The pin is intact and in good working order, shaped in a slight arge to fit over the rounded glass compartment. On the gold surround to reverse is inscribed;’ To Ann E Mortlake from the family of the late Mr Napier, 13th August. 1860 (Cannot find any information re; the 2 x names mentioned) It has no marks stating what the gold quality is, as was the norm during that period, could possibly be marked under the glass and material inside the back compartment, but have not attempted to rempve this for fear of damage, but have taken it to 2 independent jewellers who have confirmed it is gold, of a quality 9ct or higher. A beautiful brooch, in immaculate condition for age, no chips or marks to enamel or stone, nor damage to pin or glass and an interesting inscription that throws up some questions as to owner and circumstances of it being gifted to them.
