A large Romantic Victorian 19th Century hand carved shell Cameo, a Double Portrait of a Classical Mythological couple. (probably Zeus and Consort). Cameo brooches such as this one were often brought back as souvenirs from’The Grand Tour’ around Europe, Italy etc. By wealthy Victorians to remind themselves of their travels and the classical artworks they would have seen. Often they would have been worn as brooches or been on display in their bijouterie. The frame is made up of two elements, the gold ornate scrolled design and the oval band frame that varies in thickness max. Half an inch and snugly fits the contours of the shell. The cameo is set in 9ct Gold. The gold is unmarked as is often the case with these brooches made in the 1800s. It tests for 9ct gold but is fairly soft, so could be higher gold content. There is no damage on the front surface of the shell, no chips or cracks. There is a fine hairline on either side of the back of the shell and some chipping. The hairline is confined to the back only. The pin is in good working order. There are some solder marks and some reinforcement wire has been used to strengthen the hinge mounting. This could have been part of the original design. The bottom soldier point of the frame has come apart. This does not affect the safety and workings of the brooch. All imperfections are in keeping with Antiques of this age and the cameo is priced accordingly. Thickness Depth: 1/2 inch. Feel free to ask questions.
